Marriage is a sacred institution that unites two individuals in a legal and social bond, forming the foundation of a family. It is a universal concept that varies across cultures and societies, reflecting the diversity of human traditions and beliefs. In Nepal, marriage holds immense cultural significance, and various customs and rituals are observed to celebrate this union. Over time, the legal processes surrounding marriage have evolved to accommodate modern needs and preferences.
In recent years, court marriages have gained popularity among couples in Nepal due to their simplicity and efficiency. A court marriage offers a straightforward and legally recognized way to tie the knot without the elaborate ceremonies and rituals that often accompany traditional weddings.
Before proceeding with the court marriage registration, ensure that both parties meet the eligibility criteria set by Nepalese law. The key requirements include:
a) Both individuals must be of legal age (at least 20 years old for males and 18 years old for females).
b) Both parties should be mentally and physically fit to give consent to the marriage.
c) Neither party should have an existing marriage or be in any prohibited relationships according to Nepalese law.
Fill out the application form provided by the District Court or the Municipality Office with personal information of both parties.
Submit the completed application form along with all the necessary documents to the District Court or the concerned Municipality Office. Both parties must be present during the submission.
The court or municipality will verify the information and publish a notice of the intended marriage at the court premises or the respective municipality office. This notice is displayed for public viewing for about seven days.
Step 5: Objection Period
If any valid objection arises during the notice period, the court will investigate the matter. The marriage registration process may be canceled if the objection is found to be valid.
Pay the required registration fee as prescribed by the court or municipality after the completion of the notice period and resolution of any objections.
Upon successful completion of all steps and after paying the registration fee, the court or municipality will issue a Marriage Registration Certificate to the couple.
After obtaining the Marriage Registration Certificate, the couple is legally married. They may choose to hold a formal marriage ceremony to celebrate their union with family and friends.
Court marriage registration in Nepal is a straightforward and legally recognized process. By following the above steps, couples can solemnize their marriage legally and enjoy the benefits of a recognized union.
